Robert Lynn Asprin was an American science fiction and fantasy author and active fan, known best for his humorous series ‘MythAdventures’ and ‘Phule’s Company’.
The Myth Adventures are noted for and popular for their whimsical nature, myriad characters, and liberal use of puns. After the first book, every title turns on the similarity between the word ‘myth’ and the prefix ‘mis-’ or the word ‘miss’. The inaugural title, Another Fine Myth, puns on the phrase ‘another fine mess’. Chapters are usually headed by made-up quotes by famous or semi-famous persons.
The stories mostly revolve around the adventures of a few central characters, one of which is Skeeve, a youngish journeyman magician from the backwater dimension of Klah.
Skeeve is a magician’s apprentice and wannabe thief, his mind revolves not so much about wisdom and magical theory as about its practical application. He doesn’t finish his apprenticeship and has to deal with a number of mishaps and adventures that follow from those.
In a small part, Takuan borrows some features from Skeeve, though his reason to leave the Mount White monastery is not a tragedy but a simple boredom.
The ‘Myth Adventures’ series is fast-moving story full of action, the characters are colourful and vocal. It is a perfect example of light and humorous fantasy, the genre in which ‘Takuan’s Adventures’ also written.
